Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Heads to Las Vegas amidst Growing Talk of a 2024 Presidential Bid
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) hasn't officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election, but his upcoming trip to Nevada may be a sign that he plans to run for the highest office in the nation. DeSantis, who was sworn in for his second term as Florida's governor in January, will visit Las Vegas this weekend to speak at an event hosted by the Nevada Republican Party. However, the exact location of the gathering is yet to be revealed.
Nevada is typically one of the first states to hold its presidential primaries. Alida Benson, the Executive Director of the Nevada Republican Party, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that anyone with presidential ambitions should visit the state early on to start building their campaigns.
DeSantis is also scheduled to visit California and Iowa, home to a traditional early caucus for the GOP. During his journey, the governor will promote his new book, "The Courage to be Free: Florida's Blueprint for America's Revival."
DeSantis visited Nevada in April 2022 to support fellow Republican Adam Laxalt's campaign for US Senate, who later lost to Democratic incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto. Nevertheless, DeSantis is considered a frontrunner for the party's presidential nomination.
Former President Donald Trump declared his intention to seek a second four-year term in 2024, making him the betting favorite to win the GOP nomination on PredictIt, with 40% chance according to the platform's users. DeSantis comes close second with 38% popularity, although he hasn't formally announced his candidacy.
On PredictIt's market for the outright winner of the 2024 US presidential election, DeSantis tags above Trump, with President Joe Biden favored as the overall betting favorite. Biden's odds of winning the election are currently trading at 37 cents while DeSantis is valued at 28 cents and Trump at 25 cents.
Vice President Kamala Harris follows at seven cents, and California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is ranked fifth at six cents. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is the only other name with notable shares, trading at three pennies.
Recently, Biden's odds of running again were slim, with PredictIt bettors giving him an implied chance of less than 40% of being the Democrats' 2024 presidential nominee. This week, those shares have increased significantly, trading at 62 cents.
