Fan Nominations for the Poker Hall of Fame's 2023 Inductee are Now Open
The 2023 Poker Hall of Fame (PHOF) nominations are now open for business! Poker enthusiasts from all over can now throw their hat in the ring and suggest who deserves the next spot in this prestigious club. It's going to be another tight race, as the competition this year won't disappoint.
The PHOF is a closed society that honors the crème de la crème in the realm of poker. Set up way back in 1979, it's acknowledged some of the most gifted players and contributors to the craft.
Got someone in mind that deserves a spot? Don't hesitate! You can nominate them through a quick and hassle-free form on WSOP.com.
Challenging Choices
There are specific requirements that need to be met for a nominee to be eligible for the PHOF. For player nominations, they need to have faced top-tier competition, shown consistent skill, and earned the respect of their fellow players.
It's also an option to propose non-players such as WPT Tournament Director Matt Savage or Isai Scheinberg, the brainchild behind PokerStars. They must have contributed to the advancement and success of poker to be considered. Without a doubt, both Savage and Scheinberg fit the bill.
All nominees must be at least 40 years old, thus ruling out some of today's popular poker pros. The idea is to induct only those who have made an indelible, positive impact in the world of poker.
After nominations are submitted, they are reviewed by the PHOF Governing Council. They then narrow down the list to 10 finalists, who are then presented on a ballot that is sent out to current PHOF members. Each member casts 10 votes.
The last one standing will be enshrined into the PHOF during a ceremony coinciding with the WSOP Main Event final table, which will take place in just over a month's time, on July 16 and 17.
So, don't wait anymore! Send in your nominations by June 18.
PHOF Past Inductees
The PHOF, established in 1979, has welcomed countless legends of the poker scene over the years. Among the most prominent are Doyle Brunson, Johnny Moss, and Benny Binion. The late Brunson, with 10 World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, is considered one of the greatest players ever.
Moss, who boasts 9 WSOP bracelets, was key in setting up many poker traditions that endure today. Binion started the WSOP itself and played a major role in popularizing Texas Hold'em.
Moss and six others were inducted the same year the Hall of Fame was created. Brunson joined the ranks 9 years later, along with two others. Binion wasn't inducted until 2005, years after Stu Ungar and Johnny Chan were honored.
Against stiff competition, earning a spot in poker's history books has become increasingly challenging. The PHOF Governing Council decided to reduce the number of inductees to only one in 2020. As a result, it's become harder for the best in the poker world to get the recognition they truly deserve.
Layne Flack, a six-time WSOP bracelet winner who passed away in 2021, was the 2022 inductee.
