Euro 2024 quarter-finals: What are Germany's chances against Spain?
The German national football team faces Spain in the quarter-finals of the 2024 EM, presenting a challenging task. We examine Germany's chances and provide an overview of all quarter-final matches with sports betting odds.
Germany vs. Spain: A Pre-emptive EM Final?
In the first quarter-final of the UEFA European Football Championship, hosts Germany face Spain on July 5th at 18:00 CEST in Stuttgart's MHPArena. Many experts believe this encounter could have also been a thrilling final for the 2024 EM title.
Germany's coach Julian Nagelsmann can call upon the entire squad for this duel against Spain. Jonathan Tah, who missed the EM round of 16 against Denmark due to suspension, is back in the lineup for the quarter-finals.
Tah could potentially return to the starting lineup alongside Antonio Rüdiger in central defense. If so, Nico Schlotterbeck would likely have to settle for a place on the bench. Otherwise, Nagelsmann is expected to stick with the same starting lineup as in previous games.
However, Nagelsmann and midfielders Robert Andrich and Maximilian Mittelstädt are all one booking away from a potential suspension in the semi-finals.
Spain can also field their full squad and have no injury concerns. Youngster Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player in the history of the European Championship at this tournament, and forward Fabian Ruiz are ones to watch. Ruiz has scored in three of his last four international appearances and will look to continue his scoring streak against Germany.
Odds for the match against Spain are not in Germany's favor. The German national team has not won a competitive match against Spain since 1988. However, Toni Kroos expressed confidence in a press conference ahead of the game, believing that the German team can reach the semi-finals of the 2024 UEFA European Championship:
For sports betting enthusiasts, the following average odds are available for the EM quarter-final between Germany and Spain:
- Germany to win (2.75)
- Draw (3.20)
- Spain to win (2.63)
Portugal vs. France: Can Ronaldo shoot the 2016 champion into the semi-finals?
In the second quarter-final of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, Portugal with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo face France on July 5th at 21:00 CEST in Hamburg's Volksparkstadion. Despite not impressing in their previous EM 2024 matches, France remains one of the tournament favorites.
Portugal had to go to extra time and penalties to beat underdog Slovenia in the round of 16. France also had a tough match, winning only in the dying minutes against Belgium through an own goal.
Portugal might have fond memories of direct duels with France in a European Championship, having won the 2016 final against them to claim their first-ever EM title.
Nevertheless, France enters this match as favorites, with their recent head-to-head record also favoring them. France has won 11 of the last 14 meetings and will aim to secure another victory against Portugal. France can rely on their attacking prowess, led by Kylian Mbappé, who has only scored once for France in this tournament [French video]:
Betting enthusiasts can expect the following average odds for the quarter-final between Portugal and France:
Victory Portugal (3,40)Draw (3,00)Victory France (2,35)
England vs Switzerland: End of the road for the Three Lions?
England went into the 2024 European Championship as the heavy favorite. So far, however, the Three Lions have disappointed and only managed to avoid elimination in the round of 16 against Slovakia with a goal in added time. Switzerland, on the other hand, has impressed with strong performances and even managed to knock out the reigning European champion Italy 2-0 in the round of 16.
The quarterfinal between the two teams begins on July 6th at 6:00 PM in Düsseldorf's Merkur Spiel-Arena. The signs, however, could hardly be more different. While euphoria in Switzerland could hardly be greater, there is a predominantly gloomy mood among English football fans despite reaching the quarterfinals. Few spectators seem to believe that England can still win the 2024 European Football Championship.
Nevertheless, the Three Lions have quality players like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham in their ranks, so we can expect a close and thrilling encounter in this quarterfinal. If Switzerland can build on their performances against Germany in the group stage and against Italy in the round of 16, they could certainly defeat England and advance to the semifinals.
- Victory England (2,20)
- Draw (3,00)
- Victory Switzerland (3,80)
Netherlands vs Turkey: Favorites' victory or Euro surprise team?
The Netherlands face the Turkey on July 6th at 9:00 PM in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. After a mixed performance in the group stage and qualifying as one of the four best teams in third place, the Netherlands managed to impress again in the round of 16.
The Dutch defeated Romania 3-0 and now face Turkey in a seemingly winnable quarterfinal. Dutch striker Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund is likely to start again after scoring two goals against Romania.
However, Turkey has proven many football experts wrong and is so far the surprise team of the 2024 European Football Championship. With a strong fighting and playing performance, the Turks defeated the favored Austrians 2-1 in the round of 16. Turkey might have to do without their match winner Merih Demiral, who scored both goals against Austria.
Demiral made a controversial gesture during his goal celebration, leading the UEFA to initiate investigations against the player. If Demiral is suspended, this would be a significant weakening for Turkey in their Euro quarterfinal against the Netherlands.
According to sports betting odds from bookmakers, the Netherlands are the favorites to advance to the semifinals in this match:
- Victory Netherlands (1,57)
- Draw (3,90)
- Victory Turkey (6,00)
