Will the New American Ambassador Aid in Mending Frayed Relationships?
The diplomatic relationship between India and the United States has taken an interesting turn, with the appointment of Sergio Gor as the US Ambassador to India. This move, by President Donald Trump, has raised eyebrows given his sustained campaign against illegal immigrants, as Gor is an immigrant who came through Malta to the US and became a naturalized citizen.
Gor's nomination comes at a time when the vibes between the two nations are cold, with the Ukraine war casting a long shadow over their relationship. The US President, known for disregarding rules, conventions, and traditions, has been criticized by External Affairs Minister Jaishankar for his incongruities in approach towards India.
The trade between India and the US, amounting to around $190 billion, has had uncertainty thrust into it due to the current diplomatic climate. The grip of the trade imbroglio is such that there is no forum for India to put its point of view across to Trump. The trade talks between the two nations are currently suspended, leaving India helpless to pursue any remedial action.
India has been described as a "road to peace" and a "prized free and democratic partner" in the US, but also criticized with phrases like "profiteering from oil" and "maharaja of tariffs." The US has not imposed punitive sanctions on China, the biggest buyer of Russian oil, nor on Europe, whose trade with Russia is far higher than India's. In contrast, penal tariffs imposed on Russian oil by the US have been revealed to be sanctions rather than a tax on imports.
The Indian dairy sector supports millions of small stakeholders, and the bigger agriculture segment is India's pride as a food security provider for the world's largest national population. However, the trade imbroglio has made it challenging for India to assert its position as a key player in the global market.
In the midst of these challenges, India has been advised to "cajole, not confront" when dealing with the trade complications. The country will not cross certain red lines in any negotiations on trade with the US. The deadline for the application of these sanctions for importing Russian oil is August 27.
The nomination of Gor to a key post as envoy to India is unusual, but it remains to be seen how this appointment will impact the already strained relations between the two nations. The Senate clearance for Gor's appointment is yet to be obtained, adding another layer of uncertainty to the India-US relationship.
