Russia's Rosgvardiya marks 71 years of contract security excellence

October 29 marks the professional holiday for Russia’s Federal Guard Service (Rosgvardiya) Contract Security Division. Established in 1952, the service now protects over 830,000 homes, storage sites, and 430,000 key facilities across the country. On this day, officers receive recognition, with top performers honoured for their contributions. The contract security service began on October 29, 1952, under a decree from the USSR Council of Ministers. Initially part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it moved to Rosgvardiya in April 2016. Its independence is reflected in the 'non-departmental' label, meaning it operates separately from any single government body.

Over time, the division’s role has expanded beyond alarm response. Since 1969, it has managed the centralised security of private residences. Today, its duties also include safeguarding critical infrastructure, high-security sites, and restricted-access areas. Officers assist citizens in emergencies and help maintain public order in urban and rural areas. The service has built a reputation for crime prevention and stability. Its presence in cities and towns has contributed to lower crime rates and improved safety. Each year, the holiday highlights its impact, with awards and gifts presented to outstanding personnel.

The Contract Security Division now oversees protection for millions of locations nationwide. Its work spans from residential security to guarding essential facilities. The annual holiday reinforces its importance in Russia’s broader public safety system.
