Camper Van Fire Causes Traffic Disruption on A39 Towards Hamburg
On August 21, 2025, a camper van was engulfed in flames on the A39, causing significant traffic disruptions en route to Hamburg.
The incident occurred around 11:45 AM, just before the Winsen-Ost junction. The driver of a Renault Boxer noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment of the camper van and pulled over on the shoulder. By the time they stopped, the van was fully engulfed in flames.
Despite the best efforts of the fire department, the vehicle was completely destroyed. The firefighting operations closed the lane heading towards Hamburg from 12:00 PM to 13:30 PM, resulting in a several kilometers long traffic jam back to the Handorf junction.
After the firefighting operations, traffic was able to pass the incident site in a single lane. The road was repaired, and the vehicle was towed away.
The cause of the fire is believed to be a technical fault. The estimated damage to the camper van is approximately 30,000 EUR.
