Investment mogul Kevin O'Leary discusses his impressive acquisition of a logoman card featuring the legendary basketball duo of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
Kevin O'Leary, a renowned panelist on "Shark Tank" and an avid collector of watches and pens, has made a splash in the world of sports card collecting. O'Leary recently purchased a one-of-a-kind 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection dual autograph logoman card featuring Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant for a staggering $12.932 million.
The card, graded a six out of 10 by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), is a dazzling showpiece with aesthetics worthy of the subject matter. The blue felt tip signatures remain bold, and the card's gold logo signifies Kobe Bryant's participation in the 1996-97 season, during which he won his penultimate NBA Championship.
O'Leary, who was fascinated by the card's unique gold logoman, sought advice from well-connected hobbyists like Matthew Allen (Shyne150) and Paul Warshaw. He also researched the sports card hobby after speaking with Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, whose interest in sports card collecting sparked O'Leary's own.
The O'Leary group's purchase of the card set a new record for a basketball card, surpassing the previous record set by a 2009-10 National Treasures Stephen Curry logoman autograph card in a private sale. Notably, the Kobe Bryant-Michael Jordan dual logoman sports card collector team was led by NBA star Michael Jordan himself.
O'Leary has no plans to sell the purchased card. Instead, it is now part of his index, which he describes as a labor of love, half art, half science. The card is now off the market forever, at least for O'Leary's forever.
Interestingly, O'Leary believes there were three major players for the card he purchased. He believes that the intense competition among collectors contributed to the card's record-breaking price.
Fanatics, who bought Topps trading cards in January 2022, may have played a role in the card's sale. However, the details of the sale remain undisclosed. Regardless, the acquisition of this rare and valuable card by Kevin O'Leary is sure to make waves in the world of sports card collecting.
