Finland's gambling reforms bring licences but demand player vigilance

Finland’s gambling market is shifting away from Veikkaus’ long-standing monopoly. A new licence-based system is now being introduced. However, regulators warn that the transition is still in its early stages and not yet fully operational.

The change aims to improve transparency and player protection. But experts stress that a gambling licence alone does not ensure a perfect casino—its absence, though, signals serious risks. Under the new system, players must carefully check key details before signing up. A valid gambling licence is the first requirement, but further checks are needed. Regulatory bodies, company registration locations, and dispute resolution processes should all be reviewed.

Transparency remains the best indicator of a safe casino. Players should examine return-to-player (RTP) percentages, which show the game’s theoretical payout over time. Volatility is another factor—it explains how often and how large wins are distributed.

Bonuses must be treated like legal contracts. Terms such as wagering requirements, maximum bet sizes, and withdrawal restrictions should be read in full. Deposit limits and withdrawal processing times also need attention before registration.

Identity verification, known as KYC, is mandatory for all players. This process helps prevent underage gambling, money laundering, and unauthorised account access. Without it, accounts may be blocked or funds withheld. The new Finnish gambling market is still developing. Players must research casinos thoroughly before registering. Licences, RTP rates, bonus terms, and KYC procedures all play a role in ensuring a safer experience.
