Exploring the great outdoors has never been easier, as more and more cities across Europe are embracing their natural surroundings and offering an array of hiking opportunities for visitors and locals alike. In a study by SportsShoes.com, popular tourist destinations in Europe and Germany were analysed for their hiking suitability, and the results are truly inspiring.

One of the top 10 most hike-friendly cities in Europe is Edinburgh, Scotland. Known for its historic charm, Edinburgh also boasts immediate access to impressive nature trails, including the iconic Arthur's Seat.

Marseille, France, another top 10 city, offers the chance to explore the Calanques coastal landscape, providing breathtaking views and varied terrain for hikers.

Cities in Germany are particularly well-known for their hiking opportunities. Munich, with its proximity to the Alps and numerous marked hiking trails, is a favourite among enthusiasts. The city also offers access to nearby natural destinations like Tegernsee and Starnberger See, as well as the Lüneburg Heath region, which can be explored via the 223 km Heidschnuckenweg trail.

Innsbruck, Austria, surrounded by the Nordkette and the Tuxer Alps, offers numerous alpine hiking trails, making it a paradise for mountain lovers.

Nuremberg, Germany, takes the crown as the top city for national hiking opportunities. The Moritzberg tour is particularly popular, but the region around Nuremberg offers numerous trails through vineyards, forests, and historical villages.

Berlin, Germany, with almost 300 hiking routes, showcases a green side that contrasts with its bustling streets and cultural hotspots. Hikers can explore extensive parks, forests, and waterfront areas, with highlights including Grunewald, Pfaueninsel, and the paths along the Havel.

Bremen, Germany, scores with nature-friendly excursions and a historic city centre. Paths along the Weser, through marsh landscapes, or in the nearby nature park Wildeshauser Geest offer tranquility and scenic diversity.

Belfast, Northern Ireland, offers a diverse backdrop of urban green spaces, gentle hills, and coastal sections, making it an ideal destination for hikers.

However, the study did not mention any new cities from the list of the top 10 most hike-friendly cities in Europe. Sheffield, England, is also among the top 10, but no specific details about its hiking trails were provided.

Our website, a German-language service and news portal, is dedicated to informing readers about life and work abroad, and we are excited to share more about these hike-friendly cities in future articles. So, pack your hiking boots and get ready to explore Europe's great outdoors!
