Corruption leads to imprisonment: Police officer sentenced to 5.5 years for stealing 50 Bitcoins from the founder of Silk Road 2.0; internal investigation exposed his undercover crime

In a shocking turn of events, a former National Criminal Agency (NCA) officer, Paul Chowles, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for stealing 50 bitcoins from Thomas White, the founder of Silk Road 2.0. The stolen bitcoins, now worth approximately $6 million, were taken during an investigation against White, making this a significant breach of trust.

The theft occurred between May 6 and 7, 2017, while White was under investigation by the NCA. Chowles, who was part of the investigating team, devised a plan to ensure suspicion would not fall upon him after stealing the cryptocurrency. He sought to cover his tracks by transferring the stolen Bitcoin into mixing services.

The authorities initially believed that the missing bitcoins were taken by White himself. However, it was White who reported the missing bitcoins to the authorities, suggesting that someone from the NCA had access to his wallet. During the investigation, the police discovered an iPhone and notebooks linking Chowles to the account used to move the stolen bitcoins, as well as information related to Thomas White's cryptocurrency accounts in Chowles' office.

Alex Johnson, a CPS Specialist Prosecutor, stated that Chowles took advantage of his position to steal cryptocurrency. Johnson emphasised that it is right that Chowles is punished for his corrupt actions.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is the public prosecutor in England and Wales that handled the case. The NCA officer convicted in 2022 for this crime was named Ijaz Ahmad. Notably, Ahmad was leading the NCA analysts during the investigation against White.

Following his conviction, Ahmad was fired from the NCA. He was sentenced to 66 months in prison for his crimes, which include theft, transferring criminal property, and concealing criminal property.

The Merseyside Police discovered that 50 bitcoins were stolen after coordinating with the NCA and setting a meeting with Chowles. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity and honesty, especially in positions of trust and authority.
