In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, the Danish paint company Flügger has launched a new paint can that incorporates 50% post-consumer recycled plastic. The innovative container, which first hit the market in 2023, is the result of a collaboration with global packaging solutions provider, Amcor.

Amcor's CleanStream premium post-consumer recycled polypropylene has also been implemented into Maison Guerlain's hexagonal, recyclable hand cream packaging, demonstrating Amcor's commitment to sustainable packaging solutions.

The new Flügger paint can boasts a custom blue colour and colour-coded lids, bolstering the brand's identity and product differentiation. The design has received positive feedback, particularly from professional customers, who appreciate its visual appeal and practical value.

Berry's post-consumer recycled polymer, recommended for use in non-contact-sensitive components of paint containers, has contributed to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The CO2 emission reduction from Berry's polymer equates to the production of around 26 million five-litre paint containers.

The container design aligns with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, a voluntary labelling scheme that promotes environmentally friendly products. To further enhance its eco-friendliness, consumers are encouraged to reuse a plastic tub for the mixing process, seal the pouch after use to keep any remaining concentrate fresh, and then recycle the pack once it is empty.

Berry has also announced that their post-consumer recycled polymer is expected to eliminate approximately 36,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Meanwhile, Mondi and Sherwin-Williams have sought to replace rigid, 5L plastic tubs of pre-mixed paint with recyclable spouted pouches of concentrated paint refills.

Casper Paggio Hansson Felt, communications & culture manager at Flügger, stated that the container design delivers on quality, visual appeal, and sustainability. Amcor has also developed a new polypropylene closure for household products, offering child resistance, weight reduction, recyclability, and post-consumer content.

The new container design was first introduced last autumn and is now available in Flügger's European and Asian markets, marking a significant step forward in the company's strategic goal to increase recycled content and reduce virgin plastics in packaging.
