Chechen Mother Wins Custody After Public Outcry and Activist Support
Anna Aladysheva, a woman from Chechnya, has regained custody of her two daughters after a lengthy legal battle. The case drew widespread attention, involving public pressure, human rights activists, and the intervention of Aishat Kadyrova, the wife of Chechnya’s regional leader. Aladysheva married at 18 and had two daughters during her nine-year marriage. After the divorce, her ex-husband restricted her access to the children, permitting only two supervised hours per month.
Her situation worsened when she faced online harassment. A Telegram channel published personal photographs and compromising materials about her. Additionally, she was physically attacked by a former in-law after being summoned to a police station in Grozny. The case gained momentum when human rights activists and public figures, including Kadyrova, became involved. Their efforts led to the children being returned to Aladysheva. She denied claims that she had withdrawn her complaint or deleted videos for the sake of her daughters. Local opposition channel Niyso criticised Aladysheva for allegedly defying Chechen traditions, such as riding a bicycle in central Grozny. Meanwhile, her daughters have reportedly struggled psychologically due to the separation and may require professional support.
Aladysheva now has full custody of her children, ending months of restricted access. The case highlights the role of public advocacy and high-profile intervention in resolving family disputes. Her daughters, however, may still face emotional challenges following the prolonged separation.
