Billion-Dollar Art Scandal Unveiled in New Documentary on Rybolovlev vs. Bouvier

A new documentary series, The Oligarch and the Art Dealer, explores a decade-long legal battle over some of the world’s most valuable artworks. The three-part production centres on Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev and Swiss dealer Yves Bouvier, locked in a $1 billion dispute. The series premiered in full at CPH:DOX on March 15, following its pilot debut at Sundance Film Festival. The conflict began when Rybolovlev accused Bouvier of drastically inflating prices on 38 masterpieces, including works by Van Gogh, Rothko, Klimt, and Da Vinci. According to the allegations, Bouvier pocketed over $1 billion through secret markups on deals brokered for the oligarch. The dispute also involves Sotheby’s, with a 2024 New York court case playing a pivotal role in the series’ narrative.

Bouvier, a key figure in the global art storage industry, developed a network of freeports—secure facilities outside national customs control. The Geneva Freeport alone is estimated to hold artworks worth over $100 billion. The documentary uses dramatic reenactments to depict private meetings where Rybolovlev was first introduced to the contested pieces. The legal feud has dragged on for more than ten years, entangling auction houses, tax authorities, and international jurisdictions. The series examines how high-stakes art deals intersect with power, secrecy, and financial manipulation.

The documentary’s release at CPH:DOX brings renewed attention to one of the art world’s most explosive scandals. With 38 priceless works at its core, the case highlights the risks of unregulated markets and opaque transactions. The outcome of the ongoing legal battles could reshape how ultra-wealthy collectors and dealers operate in the future.
