Convict Given 55-Year Sentence for Casino Homicide

A California resident, Edgar Julian Delgado, age 25, was sentenced this week to 55 years in prison for fatally shooting a man at Nevada's now rebranded Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe Hotel & Casino. The victim, Omar Reyes Garcia, 32, died after receiving a gunshot wound to the head in a bar inside the casino on March 25, 2023.

Delgado admitted guilt to first-degree murder and using a deadly weapon. He claimed to have no recollection of the shooting during court proceedings, according to Reno, Nevada TV station KRNV.

The maximum punishment Delgado could have received was life imprisonment, as per Nevada TV station KOLO. He will be eligible for parole after serving 22 years of his sentence.

Delgado's criminal defense attorney, Thomas Villoria, asserted that the shooting was an isolated incident, and if Delgado had not been intoxicated, it wouldn't have occurred. Villoria, who previously worked as a prosecutor, made this statement in a court hearing last year.

The shooting followed a disagreement between the two men, who initially met at the Center Bar in the casino. An argument escalated, and Delgado pointed a 9 mm Glock at Garcia three times before firing the fatal shot, according to police reports.

Delgado's girlfriend, Savannah Racquel Tautaupale, 27, was the driver of the getaway vehicle. She was arrested for DUI and being an accessory after the fact. The two were headed to Mexico when their vehicle was stopped by deputies, butdetails about Tautaupale's case are unclear.

Authorities closed portions of the gaming property and Highway 50 in both directions during the search for the suspects. Each room at the casino was inspected, and guests were ordered to shelter in place or evacuated from the north and Tahoe Towers of the hotel. Dotty’s Casino in Stateline also temporarily shut down due to the incident.

No one else was injured during the shooting.
