A match of tennis is being played. - Concerned Djokovic before French Open: "Not the top choice"
Following his disappointing dress rehearsal in Geneva, tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has toned down his expectations for the French Open, starting on Sunday. "I'm concerned, to be honest. I've played really poorly this year," stated the world number one Serb: "I'm not considering myself the favorite. I'll take it one match at a time and see how far I can go."
The 24-time Grand Slam titlist will play against French contender Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round. During the event in Geneva, Djokovic (37) suffered a 4:6, 6:0, 1:6 loss to Czech upstart Tomas Machac in the semifinals after a series of unremarkable performances and even had to take a medical break. "I felt absolutely terrible about my stomach and my health," the French Open champion admitted.
Djokovic has yet to secure a tournament victory in 2024. With 2,000 points to protect from his triumph in Paris last year, he will have to at least advance to the semifinals at Stade Roland Garros in order to have a chance of defending his top position in the world rankings. Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner of Italy has a significant probability of supplanting Djokovic as number one after the tournament ends.
