Celine Dion to Definitely Return to Las Vegas Performances

The specific date isn't clear, but there's definitely one being considered.

On the "Today" show this morning, Hoda Kotb shared a fascinating story about Celine Dion and her future performances. According to Kotb, when she inquired about when Dion would be back on stage, something unusual occurred. "She shouted to her manager, 'Can I tell Hoda when I can perform again?' And he said no," she recounted.

AEG Presents' John Nelson is Dion's manager, and AEG still maintains the exclusive booking deal with Resorts World Theatre, where Dion was slated to start her latest residency on November 5, 2021. So we know she'll perform again and we know where, but we're still in the dark about when and for how many dates.

Kotb had interviewed Dion for a one-hour NBC-TV special called "Celine's Story," which aired at 10 p.m. on Tuesday. However, the revelation about the timeline of the interview presumably happened after the interview, which took place last month in Las Vegas.

The Difficult Journey to Recovery

Dion made her SPS (Stiff-person syndrome) diagnosis public in a heartfelt Instagram video in December 2022. This condition, which impacts fewer than one million individuals globally, results in uncontrollable muscle spasms when triggered by noise and emotional distress.

"Regrettably, the spasms affect every aspect of my life, sometimes making it difficult for me to walk and preventing me from using my vocal cords to sing as I'm used to," Dion shared in the video. In severe cases, individuals with SPS may be unable to walk or talk, becoming like "human statues."

Dion, 56, last performed on a concert stage on March 9, 2020, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. But she's made a string of public appearances over the past year that seem to suggest she's managing to combat this incurable disease.

The most promising of these instances was her appearance at the Grammys in February, though not on stage. Dion presented Taylor Swift with the Album of the Year award. Her optimism was evident in an Instagram video shared by singer Sonyaé Elise later, in which Dion sang and harmonized backstage at the awards ceremony.

A Fresh Look at Her Struggle

During a preview of the interview on Tuesday's "Today" show, Dion also divulged a new timeline of her fight with the disease. She stated that she first experienced symptoms in her voice 16 years ago, implying that the entirety of "Celine," her second residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace from 2011 to 2019, was affected by the condition, though it hadn't been diagnosed then.

Dion explained in the interview that spasms in her voice constricted her access to her upper notes and compelled her to lower the keys of some of her songs. "What did you want me to say?" she posed. "I have... what? We didn't know what was happening."
