Budget Carrier Volaris Bolsters Direct Flights to Las Vegas

Budget Mexican airline Volaris, situated in Mexico City, plans to broaden its non-stop flights to Sin City, Las Vegas.

Volaris has declared that starting this autumn, they will commence daily non-stop flights connecting Las Vegas and Tijuana, with operations commencing on October 29, covering Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

At Volaris, we are constantly striving to provide our customers with superior and diverse travel options, as well as providing exceptional flight experiences to match the demand of a commercially promising market like Las Vegas," stated Holger Blankenstein, Volaris’ executive vice president. "We are once again fulfilling our aspirations to extend our destination offerings for the benefit of our clients on both sides of the border."

While Las Vegas is famed for its multitude of casinos and leisure offerings, earning it the nickname Sin City, Tijuana's economy is primarily based on industrial manufacturing and trade but is also a significant tourism destination. However, Tijuana, Mexico's fifth-most populous city with approximately 2 million residents, is notorious for its shady underworld, dubious prescription drugs and medical services, counterfeit branded products, and vast red-light district.

Despite Tijuana's proximity to the US border and San Diego, its tourism industries have remained strong due to its close connection. However, kidnapping and violent crime rates continue to rise, prompting the U.S. State Department to advise U.S. citizens to reconsider trips to Tijuana and the Baja California Mexican state.

Affordable Flights Galore

The Las Vegas economy is thriving, as casinos raked in record revenues from gamblers in 2023. Gross gaming revenue in Nevada last year reached $15.5 billion, with Clark County - home to Las Vegas - accounting for $13.48 billion of the total haul.

Resort amenities like dining, retail stores, shows, and nightlife are profiting from consumers' continued willingness to spend whilst in Southern Nevada. Las Vegas has also become a significant sports destination, hosting the NFL Raiders, NHL Golden Knights, and WNBA Aces. The MLB A's could potentially move to Las Vegas in the near future.

This heightened demand for flights to Las Vegas has Southwest, Harry Reid International's primary carrier, aiming to establish direct service from Washington, D.C. at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Southwest officials also plan to introduce overnight red-eye flights from Las Vegas to the East Coast in the coming years.

Volaris in Vegas

Based on LAS airport records, Volaris accounted for 305,470 arriving and departing passengers to Las Vegas last year, securing a 9.4% market share of Las Vegas's international traffic.

Volaris already provides non-aviation services to and from Las Vegas with Guadalajara and Mexico City.

WestJet, based in Alberta, served as the largest transporter of international passengers to Las Vegas last year with 804,826. Air Canada was next with nearly 589,700 passengers.

In preparation for further airport expansion or the construction of a second commercial air facility, the Clark County Board of Commissioners earlier this year approved increasing the per-passenger fee charged to airlines from $6.49 to $7.27.

LAS handled a record-breaking 57.6 million passengers last year, far surpassing the airport's previous record of 52.6 million passengers set in 2022.
