British Con Artist and Compulsive Gambler Faces Jail Time
Sajad Hussain, a deceitful UK resident involved in romance scams via dating websites to fund his gambling obsession, is on his way to prison. This horrendous act spanned a near decade, during which Hussain managed to defraud three women of a whopping £200,000, all while maintaining a married life and two homes.
Newspaper Swindon Advertiser reported on Hussain's arrest in October 2020, following a complaint from one of his victims. Authorities then launched an investigation, leading to the shocking revelation that these women had been deceived of £200,000 over seven years.
The investigations uncovered that Hussain had used untraceable phones to communicate with his victims throughout this scam's duration. Authorities are still puzzled as to how he managed to deceive all four women, considering he tied the knot with one of them in 2018, just three years since the scam's initiation.
The Deception of Love
In 2013, Hussain allegedly met these unidentified women on various dating sites, including Plenty of Fish and Badoo. He went to considerable lengths, even assuming the role of a police officer, to convince them they were in a meaningful relationship.
According to reports, this scam thrived and grew from there. Hussain began asking for more money from the women, promising reimbursement for the item or service provided. He fabricated seemingly genuine reasons, like fixing a car he'd ruined or paying rent to avoid eviction.
He even fabricated his deceased father's suffering, claiming he'd had severe injuries from skiing or that his mother suffered from breast cancer. However, these tales disintegrated upon trial.
Winning over his victims had become a regular occurrence. One surrendered her family heirlooms, another opted for a high-interest loan from her family, and each experienced devastating effects.
Hussain received a bitter transcript from one woman who then read her victim impact statement in court. She lamented the strain of this violation, calling the impact "astronomical" on herself and her loved ones.
Another victim recounted how her financial situation after a child's birth was adversely affected, and she couldn't take a full maternity leave due to her accumulated debts.
No Regret
One woman gave Hussain £15,500 between December 2013 and December 2014. Another relinquished £140,000 between June 2014 and June 2020. While the third succumbed to losing £48,500. All money was spent on Hussain's gambling bent.
In April 2022, he pleaded guilty to the five charges of fraud. His show of regrets in court was ineffective. He couldn't pull the wool over this judge's eyes.
The complex and well-designed plot seemed to have insulated Hussain from any guilty feelings. He created fake personas and numerous excuses to maintain his deception.
The judge in charge of the case was not deceived, recording: "You were callous and greedy, discarding them when they were no longer profitable to you financially."
Hussain will be imprisoned for the next two and a half years. His probation option awaits after that, but the victims are left with the irreversible reality of losing their money.
