Bet3000 takes legal action against the withdrawal of the gambling licence and criticizes the GGL's approach
The sports betting provider Bet3000 has not been on the whitelist of the Joint Gaming Authority of the States (GGL) for several days and therefore currently does not have a license for sports betting in Germany. Now, IBA Entertainment Ltd., the company behind the Bet3000 brand, has officially spoken out. The Maltese company announces legal action and accuses the GGL of improper conduct.
Confusion at the sports betting provider
After days of speculation about why Bet3000 disappeared from the GGL whitelist and the website was switched to maintenance mode, the provider itself has now spoken out.
In an official press release, IBA Entertainment referred to the fact that Bet3000 was accused of "violating certain technical regulations in online sales". The removal from the GGL whitelist was carried out "without further notice".
Simon Springer, director of IBA Entertainment, expressed his incomprehension that the GGL not only prohibited the online business but also ordered the closure of the stationary betting shops:
From my point of view, there is no sufficient basis for the GGL's decision to revoke our license. The only accusation from the GGL relates to a technical regulation in online sales, which does not justify such a drastic measure. – Simon Springer, director of IBA Entertainment, source: IBA Entertainment / Bet3000**
Springer pointed out that they had already involved several law firms specializing in such cases to clarify the matter.
Has the GGL gone too far?
Unlike the UK Gambling Commission in Britain, which regularly imposes severe penalties, the German gambling authority has rarely made an appearance in this regard and seems to be working behind the scenes.
In the case of the sanctions against Bet3000, however, the GGL may have made mistakes, as the sports betting provider claims. Towards the specialist magazine games & business, Bet3000 explained that the reasonable deadline for rectifying breaches of duty before the license suspension was not granted.
Instead, the GGL also ordered the closure of over 200 terrestrial betting shops from one day to the next, although there was no breach in this area, and only a suspension of the license for the online offer should have been carried out, if at all.
What's next for customers and employees?
Just a few days ago, there was no information on the temporary Bet3000 website about what would happen to the customers of the bookmaker. Now, a note has been added that cash withdrawals are possible. Unlike the sports betting provider Tipster, which lost its gambling license last year, Bet3000 therefore does not appear to be affected by insolvency.
However, the company employs around 1,500 people who now face an uncertain future. To ensure the swift resumption of operations, especially of the stationary businesses, IBA Entertainment has initiated an emergency application and an interim injunction. A decision is expected in the next few days to weeks.
Following the removal of Bet3000 from the GGL whitelist and the subsequent suspension of their sports betting license, IBA Entertainment Ltd., the company behind the Bet3000 brand, has shared news of their intent to take legal action against the GGL, alleging improper conduct.
The recent developments have also led to speculation in the news about the future of Bet3000's around 1,500 employees, as the company is currently facing an uncertain period and has initiated emergency applications and interim injunctions to ensure a swift resumption of operations.
