Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways Extend Direct Flights to Las Vegas
Two cost-effective airlines, Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways, are broadening their operations at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. These airlines target customers who prefer to utilize smaller airports rather than major hubs.
Avelo Airlines, founded in 2021 by Andrew Levy, a former Las Vegas aviation executive and ex-president of Allegiant Air, has operated in Las Vegas since October 2021. The company recently organized a ceremony to publicize its expansion with the iconic showgirls of Las Vegas.
Avelo Airlines has launched nonstop flights to four new destinations from Las Vegas: Bend/Redmond (OR), Sonoma/Santa Rosa (CA), Brownsville (TX), and Eureka/Arcata (CA). Expect additional nonstop flights to Dubuque (IA) and Portland/Salem (OR) on September 13 and October 5, 2023, respectively.
Andrew Levy, founder of Avelo Airlines, referred to this expansion as a "winning bet" that would bolster tourism in Southern Nevada while providing new job opportunities. Avelo has designated Las Vegas as its sixth US base and hired 50 crewmembers and pilots based in Las Vegas.
"Vegas has something for everyone, and Avelo's affordability, convenience, and reliability will make getting to this popular destination easier than ever. The new flights, destinations, and jobs our new base enables hits the jackpot for Las Vegas, Avelo, and, most importantly, our customers," Levy mentioned at the Harry Reid International Airport.
More Services
In addition to Avelo Airlines, Breeze Airways (formerly Moxy) has begun its nonstop service to Las Vegas this week. This budget airline was established in Utah and announced its plans for Las Vegas in June 2021.
Breeze Airways' aircraft will now serve Las Vegas from Raleigh-Durham (NC) with thrice-weekly flights and from Tampa with a daily one-stop flight. These new routes are expected to increase traffic at Harry Reid International Airport.
This airport, previously known as McCarran International, handled nearly 4.94 million arriving and departing passengers in July 2023, just below the record set in October 2022 and May 2023.
International Ambitions
The increased domestic routes have received support from the Clark County Aviation Department, while the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) seeks to expand international flights.
Steve Hill, chairperson of LVCVA, confirmed that before the COVID-19 pandemic, a deal was reached to launch nonstop flights from Tokyo to Las Vegas. However, the pandemic led to a temporary halt.
Now, after resuming discussions, Hill mentioned last month that these negotiations have progressed. Japan's plans for commercial casino resorts have faced numerous obstacles. MGM Resorts' Osaka project, a substantial integrated resort project, has encountered delays. The opening has been delayed again, this time until 2030.
