Atlantic City Police Arrest WWE's Sonya Deville for Carrying a Firearm Outside Borgata Casino
WWE personality Sonya Deville, legally known as Daria Berenato, was taken into custody at the Borgata in Atlantic City last month. This was after a firearm was discovered in Deville's vehicle by the casino's valet parking team. The incident was first reported by TMZ, who uncovered the associated court records.
Atlantic City cops apprehended Deville, 29, on February 19 with no conflict. Upon arrival at the scene, as per police reports, she exhibited a gun permit. however, the permit turned out to be invalid in New Jersey.
It's been reported by TMZ, citing sources, that Deville had bought the firearm for personal security following an alleged 2020 home intrusion where a 24-year-old individual attempted to kidnap her. The weapon is registered in Florida, Deville’s home state.
Deville was issued a summons and is set to appear in court later this month, following charges of carrying an unlawful weapon.
Berenato was in AC celebrating her recent engagement to fitness model Toni Cassano, according to an anonymous WWE representative interviewed by Wrestling Inc. The valet staff searched Deville's car in an effort to confirm the vehicle's ownership and found the gun in the glove box.
LGBTQIA+ Pioneer
Berenato made history by being the first openly gay female wrestler in the WWE when she came out unexpectedly during Season 6 of the USA Network’s “WWE Tough Enough” reality TV series in 2015.
Her WWE bio states, "Having a background in MMA, Deville employs her understanding of striking and submission holds to overpower and defeat her competitors." Regardless of whether Deville is competing in the cage or the ring, she displays an impressive ease, as she swiftly delivers combinations that leave her opponents puzzled about the assault.
Deville last graced our screens during the February 10 episode of "WWE SmackDown," where she took part in a tag match alongside Chelsea Green against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. Since then, Berenato has wrestled in numerous live matches, including some post-arrest events.
Madison Square Garden Showdown
Although Deville has yet to address the incident publicly, her upcoming bout with Charlotte Flair is still expected to proceed at Madison Square Garden on March 12.
The NYC venue made the match announcement on Wednesday via a tweet.
