Toronto casino fraud scheme leads to five arrests
Recently, five suspects were arrested after an alleged table game fraud was discovered at the Grand Canadian Casino Resort in Toronto, Ontario.
Authorities said a casino dealer "coordinated" with four players inside the casino. Investigators have not released details of the fraud scheme.
On March 18, we contacted the Ontario Provincial Police Office of Investigations and Enforcement to investigate this conspiracy.
The five Canadians were later arrested, police announced Wednesday.
Charge Announcement
Suspects include:
- Anagha Varghese, 21, of Etobicoke. He was charged with three counts each of fraud, breach of trust, fraud over $5,000 and theft under $5,000.
- Tajveer Kour, 21, Brampton, was charged with gambling fraud, criminal breach of trust, fraud over $5,000 and theft under $5,000.
- Yakshu Nehra, 23, of Etobicoke, was charged with three counts of gambling fraud, three counts of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of theft under $5,000.
- Himanshu Tanwar, 25, of Etobicoke, was charged with three counts of gambling fraud, three counts of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of theft under $5,000.
- Parkh Raheja, 25, of Etobicoke, was charged with three counts of gambling fraud, two counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of fraud under $5,000, and one count each of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000 , charged $5,000 per count.
After being processed by the police, both men were released. Their case was handed over to local prosecutors in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto.
The Grand Canadian Casino Resort in Toronto opens June 20, 2023. It is currently considered Canada's largest gambling venue and is located in Etobicoke.
Previous Fraud Charges
In April 2023, when the gaming site was still called Casino Woodbine, authorities discovered a similar fraud scheme involving an electronic dice dealer and multiple players, the Toronto Sun reported.
Five Canadian suspects were also arrested in the attack. These include accusations of game cheating and dealer collusion.
Among them is Arthur Segovia, 52, of Etobicoke. He was charged with breach of trust, fraud, deception over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.
Others include Khalil Evans, 29, Donovan Smyth-Todd, 30, and Daniel Hatton, 25, all of Toronto. The fifth suspect is Andrew Gayle-Bourne, 33, of Oakville. All four were charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.
Details of their court proceedings were not immediately clear.
Government officials fined Woodbine Casino CAD$80,000 (US$60,000) after discovering it violated the Gambling Control Act.
But Great Canadian Entertainment, the parent company of Woodbine Casino, defended compliance.
