Saarbrücken fell short by 3 points. - Zeitz: This is the reason for our inadequacy.
After a season with its fair share of ups and downs, coach Rüdiger Ziehl (46) and the players were left feeling disappointed, knowing that if they had managed to secure a 1-0 win against relegated Halle near the end of April, they would be vying for promotion to the second division rather than facing Regensburg.
Following a superb performance in Regensburg, team captain Manuel Zeitz (33) summed it up by saying "We performed well in the matches against the top teams. However, we fell short on the road. Our performances against Regensburg were superior, but we were unable to clinch a victory."
The stats make it clear that FCS performed well against the league's top four - with four points against champions Ulm, one against Münster, four against Regensburg, and six against Dresden. Ziehl conceded, "Although we were better in these matchups, we couldn't secure the necessary points. The disappointment kicks in when you see the small margin we fell short of."
Contrastingly, their record against the four teams relegated from the league - Halle, Freiburg II, Duisburg, and Lübeck - was less remarkable, with just three wins. Interestingly, they managed two against Freiburg and one against Halle. Meanwhile, an astonishing 15 draws topped the league, which Zieht acknowledged, "The season and the table don't lie after 38 games."
