Daum criticizes Borussia Dortmund. - "You're allowed to discuss competition imbalance"
BVB suffers a 3-0 defeat at the hands of relegation candidates, Mainz. The Champions League finalists fell behind by three goals within the first 23 minutes of the game.
Ex-coach Christoph Daum (70), unable to comprehend the loss, remarks, "A few thousand Dortmund fans go to Mainz and then witness this kind of start! It feels like a prank." He adds, "The players' performance was sluggish, devoid of life. One could also talk about unfair competition."
Daum addresses the impact of the loss, stating, "Mainz's win has created chaos in the bottom of the table. Mainz moves out of the relegation zone, pushing Union Berlin down." Mainz now only needs one point on the final matchday to secure their relegation.
Daum further elaborates, "Several players know: that was my farewell game. They've likely already confirmed their transfer. It's already over for them. They're just playing a swan song. Some first-teamers aren't even present and are attending a kid's birthday party or having a good time elsewhere. There's no excitement left."
Daum voiced concerns over the impact of announcements from authorities on the team, "It'll fall on deaf ears." He finds the situation disgraceful.
Regarding accusations of unfair competition, Daum responds, "You can question Cologne: what have you been doing all season? What errors led to this situation? If you're critical of yourself, you have to accept your share of the blame. The rest of the Bundesliga isn't too concerned."
Although a win in Mainz would have benefited Dortmund, the losses have prevented them from finishing in 4th place.
Daum concludes, "What Dortmund could, should, and should be concerned about: the TV money. Some should reflect on where their income comes from."
