Yoni Barrios declared incompetent to stand trial in Las Vegas Strip stabbings
Yoni Barrios was declared mentally incompetent and unable to stand trial on Friday in connection with multiple stabbings on the Las Vegas Strip, according to media reports.
The 32-year-old man allegedly killed two victims and injured six others on the Las Vegas Strip on Oct. 6. Barrios is charged with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon and six counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.
He will now be sent to a mental health facility in Nevada rather than face criminal charges, local station KTNV reports.
It was also revealed on Friday that two of the three psychiatrists who had examined Barrios in recent weeks agreed he was now unable to stand trial, the report said. This means that he cannot understand the accusations against him. It also means he cannot assist lawyers in preparing a defence.
As a patient, Barrios is receiving treatment for any mental disorder.
He was later re-evaluated by experts to determine his abilities. If he proves legally competent in the future, he could face trial for the stabbing.
Barrios has been held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center since his arrest. If his case progresses, he could face the death penalty.
Barrios refuses to appear in court
Barrios refused to go to the Las Vegas Regional Justice Center for a competency hearing on Friday, KTNV said. Attorneys representing Barrios were in court Friday to make arguments to Judge Christy Craig before she handed down her sentence.
Barrios' acting assistant public defender, Scott Coffey, previously said his client received mental health treatment before the stabbing, the Associated Press reported.
The victim asked to pose for photos
The fatal incident in October occurred when Barrios approached women outside the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. They pose as showgirls and work for the modeling agency Las Vegas' Best Showgirls.
Police said as part of the scene, he tried to take a picture of her with a large knife. Police said the blade was 20 to 25 centimeters long.
The women refused and Barrios "thought the women were laughing at him and making fun of his clothes," a statement to police from Barrios said, according to KTNV. The victim who survived the attack later said the women did not laugh at him but were afraid of the situation, the report said.
Barrios then allegedly stabbed one of them, Maris Digiovanni, a 30-year-old woman from Las Vegas, and a bystander, 47-year-old Canadian Brent ·Brent Hallet. Both victims died. The other victims survived, some with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
In recent weeks, the New York Post reported that Barrios had previously worked as a stripper. He was also deemed an "illegal immigrant" from Guatemala to the United States, the Post reported.
The Post added that he frequented the Drai nightclub in Las Vegas. A few months ago, he posted photos of himself on social media in which he appeared to be wearing expensive clothes and jewelry. Recently, Barrios ran out of money and became homeless. He also has a criminal record in California, government sources told Fox News.
A stabbing incident on the Las Vegas Strip drew national attention.
At a well-attended rally in Minden, Nevada, on October 8, former President Donald Trump called Barrios a "sadistic murderer" who carried out "heinous acts." Stabbing attack.
