Customs officials seize smuggled goods. - Wood turners gather at Olbernhau for a meeting from Germany and other countries.

Enthusiasts from around the globe will gather in Olbernhau this weekend for a woodturning event, as announced by Martin Steinert from the Erzgebirge Woodturning Centre. Boasting a turnout of approximately 2000 participants, this gathering isn't limited to just Saxony but also welcomes attendees from different regions of Germany and even international visitors, including Hawaii, Australia, Belgium, Great Britain, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Steinert elaborated on the charm of woodturning: "It's the interaction between skill and design that makes woodturning so appealing." Various techniques will be showcased at the event, from delicate figurines to massive bowls measuring two meters in diameter, essentially anything that can be secured onto a lathe.

The core focus of the meeting is knowledge-sharing and idea exchange among the participants. There will be a lineup of lectures, demonstrations, exhibits, a tool fair, and presentations from relevant institutions. Additionally, other woodworking techniques will be showcased here, such as hoop turning.

Woodturning is popular in Saxony, particularly in the Ore Mountains. It caters to professional wooden toy makers, artisans, and hobbyists alike. In fact, many of the decorations in annual Christmas parlor settings are made on woodturning lathes - think nutcrackers, smokers, angels, and miner figurines.

This practice, however, has its roots in various parts of the world, with distinct techniques evolving over time. Steinert highlighted that the meeting itself, which occurs every other year in a new location, evolved from an online forum where woodturning enthusiasts shared ideas. The first forum meeting was held in Munich back in 2007.

The location chosen for this year's event is Saigerhütte, a historically significant site related to metallurgy. This site belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region. Attendees can look forward to witnessing demonstrations of traditional sawing methods dating back 400 years. The event isn't exclusive to woodturners - onlookers and anyone else curious about the craft are also welcome.
