Berlin's central station fully shut down - Woman and child flee from ICE authorities; mother perishes.
Late in the evening on Wednesday, a devastating incident took place on a railway station. As reported by rbb, quoting the federal police, a woman and her child got caught under an ICE train.
The Berliner Zeitung adds more details, stating that the incident happened at 6:20 p.m. on platform 13. Eyewitnesses claim that the duo stepped onto the tracks before being struck by an incoming train. Regrettably, the presumed mother died instantly, while the child sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital by a medical helicopter.
Witnesses are being provided with support, and they're understandably distraught. In total, about 50 first responders have been deployed.
Following the incident, the main station was fully closed down. The authorities are analyzing the event to see if it was potentially a planned suicide attempt.
