Schultz departs from Cologne - Will the coach arrive soon?
No more surprises, but officially announced: Schultz, who took the reins from Steffen Baumgart (52/HSV) in January, has been let go after just 18 games.
Schultz stated, "Since we didn't accomplish our main goal - class maintenance - it's consistent and right that someone else gets a fresh start."
Both assistant coaches André Pawlak (53) and Kevin McKenna (44) also exit the club.
Christian Keller (45), the sports director, says, "We spent a considerable amount of time last week discussing the second half of the season with Timo and thoroughly examining every option. Ultimately, we all agreed that we needed fresh energy in the coaching staff to handle the challenging second league season. I want to extend my utmost gratitude to Timo for his superb dedication to the FC. He gave his all from his first day until his last."
"Schulle" himself would have liked to stay at the FC ("I don't need to tell anyone that the FC is an exceptional club"), but he doesn't have a valid 2nd division contract. The new regime no longer trusts Schultz at the Geißbockheim. Even the recent deliberations in the past few days failed to alter anything. It is also rumored that Keller initially wanted to stick with Schultz. However, the wavering board surrounding President Werner Wolf (67) was reportedly against a Schultz succession.
It would've been a poor message. Schultz has only managed three wins since taking the helm and failed to save the club. The dismal performances against Darmstadt (0:2) and on the last matchday at Heidenheim (1:4) were especially disappointing.
The most promising candidate for succeeding Schultz is Christian Eichner (45) from Karlsruhe.
