Subpar circumstances - Will Butzen potentially depart from Jena?
Instead of just youthful players bidding farewell to the club, sports director Stefan Böger has also pushed a good number of seasoned players out. Additionally, Nils Butzen, one of the club's longtime contributors, might be Carl Zeiss Jena's next significant loss.
It's not out of disdain for the team that's prompting Butzen's departure. Rather, it's the duration of his contract he has trouble agreeing to.
"I've reached a point with the club where they have an offer for me," Butzen explains. "I haven't decided yet, though. I'd love to stay here, but it must make sense beyond just the present," he says. "It's not all about money, but I'm 31 years old, and I need a plan for the future. You can't simply live day by day."
Butzen joined Jena in September of last year. He boasts a wealth of experience, even with having played 18 second division games for Magdeburg, thus serving as an excellent mentor for the club's youngsters and securing Jena's youth strategy. Fortunately, Böger won't be kept waiting long for a final decision from Butzen. The player says, "I have chosen to make a decision before the last match."
