Netherlands crush opposition. - Wilders urges sending migrants back to Germany.

Six months after the successful election of hardline politician Geert Wilders, four Dutch political parties have declared their intentions to form a coalition. The nation's new prime minister has not yet been selected. Wilders stepped down from his post to focus on forming this coalition.

It's become clear that the Netherlands is planning to significantly reduce its migration policies. Wilders promised to create "the most stringent asylum policy" ever.

A 26-page contract outlines plans to make the Netherlands less appealing for asylum seekers. A wide-ranging deportation offensive is planned, possibly involving force, and the granting of asylum will be limited.

The new policy also has repercussions for Germany. The agreement stipulates:

▶︎ There needs to be a "significant tightening of mobile surveillance measures, border controls, and border surveillance". Furthermore, it states: "Illegal migrants discovered during land border controls will be returned to Germany and Belgium immediately ..."

In essence, asylum seekers looking to travel from Germany to the Netherlands will be immediately turned back.

"Sizable consequences" for Germany

German FDP parliamentarian Otto Fricke (58) warns in an article for POLITICO that Germany will be affected by these changes. "The regulations will also have considerable consequences for the German-Dutch border area, as there will be increased expulsions of refugees," said Fricke. The new coalition agreement "requires careful analysis and scrutiny regarding migration policies."

The left-leaning Belgian EU politician Guy Verhofstadt (71) sounded a warning on Twitter: "For Wilders fans beyond the Netherlands: hold your applause," said the Wilders critic. "He'll soon push asylum seekers into your country and then block any attempts to reach EU-wide solutions."

Besides Wilders' PVV party, the coalition's future governing parties are the right-wing liberal VVD led by former Prime Minister Mark Rutte (57), the new right-wing conservative NSC, and the farmer's party BBB.
