Political figures linked to chlorine gas incident in Weinstadt - Who is this tiny green figure?
A worker at the mall secured the chilly storage compartment as the fire department and cops were notified.
Among the firefighters handling the chlorine gas situation was a prominent government official: Siegfried Lorek (46, CDU), the State Secretary for Migration in the Ministry of Justice.
He quickly joined the operation. "I was in the lead car of the assault squad," Lorek said.
At the shopping plaza, he suited up in a chemical protection outfit for ten minutes of cleanup work inside the cold room. "It's quite demanding," Lorek adds. "I wear a respirator under the suit." The special forces must rotate shifts. "We also have to because the oxygen in the canisters runs out."
Lorek has been part of the Winnenden volunteer fire department's hazardous materials team since he was a youngster. "We're responsible for the entire Rems-Murr region," he notes.
This implies he is required to participate in a mandatory exercise twelve times a year. "This was my second genuine field operation in the hazardous materials unit," he remarks. Lorek recalls taking part in various other incidents to put out fires or safeguard accident scenes up to ten times a year.
Is a state official from the government actually prepared to act when the sirens blare? Lorek responds: "We have several emergency systems. I left right away whenever I'm in town, which is typically at night." This scenario is quite typical, according to Lorek. "I'm not the only busy person in the volunteer fire department."
In such instances, his family and political contacts must cope without him. "I didn't make it to the meeting with the local council candidates on Saturday," he said, emerging from the fire station at 11 o'clock at night.
