700 kids rescued from harm's way - Whitsun camp gets hit by lightning
It was approximately 2 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon when lightning struck the grounds of a fire department camp in the Soest district (NRW). The camp was currently housing around 700 children. Following complaints of leg tingling from some of the children, authorities promptly activated what's known as a MANV alarm (Mass Casualty Incident) and assembled a large force of firefighters and rescue workers.
Luckily, there seem to be no injuries reported as of now. Those children and their supervisors were safely evacuated from the camp and moved to buildings on the grounds of the former rocket station in Soest-Ruploh. With the help of emergency personnel, they're being given medical attention and evaluations. A total of 38 individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for more thorough investigations.
The throng of over 100 firefighters and rescuers continued their work throughout the late afternoon.
