Berlin police officer protests environmental crisis - "What's the issue, sir?"

During a Saturday morning on Moltke Bridge's road connecting the government district to the main station, climate activists sat and lay down, disrupting traffic. Authorities announced over the radio for them to depart and transfer their roadblock demonstrations to the sidewalk.

Despite the instruction to vacate the area, the rebellious ecological protesters persisted on the road, deterring numerous police personnel guarding the perimeter. One of the officers appeared less than content with this situation.

Later, videos shared by the ecological protesters revealed the tense exchange: In them, a law enforcement official confronts a hostile activist, cursing at him, "Don't sit here!". The officer then lashes out, "What's wrong with you, man? Do you understand this?"

However, the annoyed officer's actions did not stop at yelling.

"You should be ashamed of yourselves!"

He approaches the man on the asphalt again: "Yes, you're so ignorant, that's not normal, man! You should be ashamed of yourselves." Then the officer faces away from him, addressing the bystanders who had gathered around the protest, "Can everyone please be quiet!"

The announcement from the policeman resonated positively with some onlookers, who clapped and cheered, "Call a crane and tow it away."

On the afternoon of that day, authorities confirmed that only a small fraction of the group, numbering approximately 60 activists, complied with the order to move. They would now determine the identities of the remaining climate protesters.

Concerning the heated interchange with the officer and the activist, police spokesperson Martin Halweg shared in an interview, "This is essentially a threat. The man was continuously told to leave the road."

The climate activist's response was startling. Crawling beneath a police car, he positioned himself awkwardly, eventually lying with a significant portion of his body and head under the bumper. This act placed him in considerable danger.

The spokesperson concluded by mentioning, "We are now examining the officer's linguistic usage to ascertain if it was standard and formal. However, no unlawful behavior is evident at this point."

The ecological protesters had gathered on that day for the blockade to speak out against, among other issues, an indictment targeting them for forming a criminal network. The Neuruppin Public Prosecutor's Office had triggered this legal process early that week, focusing on five affiliates of the "Last Generation". The motivation for this accusation was a series of attacks on PCK Oil Refinery in Schwedt, in the northeastern part of Brandenburg, the primary international airport - BER, and the Barberini Museum in Potsdam from April 2022 to May 2023.
