The lackluster 0:0 draw against Fürth wasn't as crucial for the team's descent into the lower leagues as 1. FC Kaiserslautern's 1:3 loss to Hertha BSC. With the positioning on the last matchday, it's evident that FCM can no longer slip into the relegation zone.
1. FC Magdeburg to Stay Put?
This development also fuels speculation surrounding the personnel at the Blue-Whites. News broke that winger Baris Atik (29) is on Hertha's radar.
Atik addressed these rumors on the MDR microphone: "The media likes to speculate a lot, and there's always talk. I'm content here. And the club hasn't approached me to sell me off. As long as that doesn't happen, I'll remain here."
Transfermarkt.de states that Atik has a contract with FCM lasting until at least 2025. If Hertha indeed has serious intentions, FCM would presumably receive compensation after his transfer. And we'll have to see if they'd even let one of their most valuable players depart.
Atik was a significant contributor to the 0-0 tie against Fürth, but even he couldn't find the back of the net: "We wanted to give the fans a victory. Sadly, we failed to achieve that."
