Attractive Images of Partners - What's making the Bayern leader appear so anxious?
The atmosphere at FC Bayern's headquarters remained pretty calm despite their recent loss in the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid. With no significant stakes left for Munich this season, everything seemed peaceful and uneventful.
However, things took an interesting turn during Thomas Tuchel's final training session ahead of their last Bundesliga home game against Wolfsburg on Sunday. Commentators noticed an unexpected surge of tension at Säbener Straße. Tuchel, in the midst of a conversation, all of a sudden sat down in front of a container between the professionals, where they kept all their training equipment. His facial expressions indicated a mix of wonderment and distress, prompting him to slap his hands over his face multiple times.
One could wonder whether Uli Hoeness was, in fact, desperate in his efforts to find a new coach for Bayern, a quest he had been engaged in for almost three months alongside sports director Max Eberl. While it's undeniable that the team is growing increasingly agitated due to the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new coach, Eberl disclosed some candid details about the situation.
"We had initially aimed to have a new coach in place by the end of April," said Eberl on Sunday. "It's now the middle of May, and we're also frustrated because we're nowhere near where we thought we'd be. We are still conducting negotiations - not just with one person - and we'd like to find a new coach as soon as possible."
Despite the prevailing frustration, Eberl suggested that some of the blame for the confusion surrounding Tuchel's successor could be attributed to the candidates themselves, particularly those who had publicly turned down the record champions in recent weeks. Names such as Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, and their respective entourages received a fair amount of criticism for their public rejections.
"There's a lot of support, not just from the media, but also from the protagonists themselves," said Eberl. "Our competitors have acted quite aggressively at times. I'm somewhat familiar with the process. Normally, you discuss matters behind closed doors, you reach an agreement, or you don't and then you part ways. This doesn't make it any easier."
The elephant in the room was Bayern's struggle to replace Thomas Tuchel, who had been unceremoniously axed after a series of inconsistent performances. It became evident that the team had already received three rejections from notable candidates - Xabi Alonso, who chose to stay at Leverkusen, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick. Other coaches, like Unai Emery, Roberto De Zerbi, and Roger Schmidt, preferred to remain at their respective clubs or move to the Premier League.
Eberl's candid admission betrayed Bayern's growing desperation and frustration. In an unanticipated twist, they have been forced to consider candidates who were not initially on their list or at least not very high on it. Now, it appears that Hansi Flick and Roberto De Zerbi are front-runners for the position, although Eberl has yet to give up on De Zerbi despite his commitment to Brighton.
While some Bayern officials initially discounted the prospect of Hansi Flick's return this season, the situation has changed so drastically that the record champions have had to broaden their search. Even Thomas Müller, a longtime Bayern player, showed a remarkable sense of humor as he addressed the situation.
"We can't control it," said the forward. "That's why I'm waiting for more information on the potential candidates." When prompted for his thoughts on Flick, Müller quipped, "Well, somebody finally asked so that we can move forward!"
With the coaching indecision potentially impacting Bayern's overall performance, it's clear that the team's hierarchy is under immense pressure to rectify the situation before things spiral further out of their control.
