Leite cannot attend the event in Germany. - What harm could Union suffer due to their departure from the European Championship?
Defender Diogo Leite, age 25, had a challenging year with Union and was longing for a respite. However, his break was regrettably shorter than he wanted. Leite, a left-footed player, did not make it into the extended Portuguese national team, missing the Euro in Germany.
A crushing blow for the motivated central defender. Leite had dreamed of participating in the tournament in the country where he'd been playing for two years. That aspiration, now shattered.
Even back in March, the left-footer played in two friendly matches for the Portuguese national team, mentioning: "I've been part of every youth national team, was once a member of the A national team. I believe I'm ready." Despite this, he didn't play in either game, and is still waiting for his national team debut.
His subpar season with Union might have been the reason behind Leite's exclusion from the Portuguese squad. Only a few Union professionals made a convincing case for their national team in this season when the club narrowly avoided relegation.
Diogo Leite's contract with Union Berlin stretches until 2026
If another club were to make a substantial offer to Union in the summer, Leite could potentially depart the club before being back in the sights of the Portuguese national team at subsequent major events.
