Officials assess safety in 40 urban areas. - What causes Leipzig's citizen offices to underperform?
The Berlin/Brandenburg consumer advocacy group conducted a study to discover which cities had the most satisfied residents when it comes to ID and registration matters. They evaluated more than 59,000 online reviews from 356 authorities in the 40 biggest cities, giving a maximum of 5 stars for outstanding satisfaction. In the east, Berlin and Erfurt got good marks.
Central Germany's underperformers included Leipzig (ranked 27th), Halle (23rd) in Saxony-Anhalt, and Chemnitz (19th). These three cities from major eastern German cities ranked poorly in the government's extensive ranking.
The top contender was Bochum's public authorities, accumulating an average score of 4.16 out of 947 ratings. In contrast, Mönchengladbach's public authorities had a poor rating of 2.72 out of 686 evaluations.
In Leipzig, for instance, long queues and extended waiting times are commonplace, with some complainants reporting hundreds of people queuing for an appointment. Nils, a user, summarized the citizens' sentiments: "The imposition of what's asked of us in these offices. Time is money."
The city council acknowledged the problems: "Demand surpasses capacity," they stated when asked last summer. Unsurprisingly, the city is looking to hire new employees to ease the workload, as they currently process nearly 495,000 inquiries with only 70 workers.
Here are the rankings in the east:
The consumer advocates encourage public authorities in the eastern cities, along with all others, to make their staff more cognizant of criticism's impact to better serve their constituents: "However, our investigation displays significant disparities across Germany in respect to the satisfaction with local authorities," the professionals conclude.
