West Ham midfielder Paqueta Seeks Conclusion of Investigation to Restore $90M Man City Transfer.

Brazilian soccer star Lucas Paqueta's representatives are optimistic that an ongoing investigation into alleged gambling violations will be concluded quickly, allowing a $90 million move to English Premier League champions Manchester City to potentially be revived over the summer, according to The Times of London.

Manchester City had come to an agreement in principle with Paqueta's current team, West Ham, in August 2023. However, the deal fell apart when it emerged that the midfielder was being investigated by the Football Association (FA) for potential betting breaches.

City's decision-makers were hesitant after learning that the investigation revolved around suspicions of suspicious betting patterns in Brazil related to yellow cards shown to Paqueta. Nevertheless, they are still interested in signing him if he is cleared of any wrongdoing.

Questionable Wagers

The FA inquiry seems to focus on a yellow card Paqueta received for a late challenge on Aston Villa's John McGinn on March 12, 2023.

Suspect betting activity included an unusually high number of wagers placed on him getting booked in that game.

Some of these wagers were made in Duque de Caxias, a city located on Brazil's Guanabara Bay. Paqueta was born on Paqueta Island, a small half-square-mile island in the same bay, and adopted his moniker as a dedication to his birthplace.

Moreover, some wagers were also placed with Betway, West Ham's jersey sponsor, which generally does not accept bets from Brazil.

Although Paqueta has not been implicated in placing the bets, individuals close to him are being looked into, says The Times. The player continues to proclaim his innocence, denying any wrongdoing, knowledge, or complicity.

West Ham's Futures on Hold

The West Ham board is growing impatient for the investigation to be wrapped up, as the resulting uncertainty is impeding the team's transfer plans for the upcoming summer market. The sale's proceeds would dramatically expand their transfer budget and rework their future recruitment efforts.

However, a drawn-out inquiry could leave West Ham in a panic to recruit a replacement for Paqueta if it comes to a conclusion late in the transfer window. Unfortunately, the FA has refrained from offering any updates on the situation.

Last year, Paqueta was questioned at least twice and approved the investigators gaining access to his phone.

Supposing the FA is seeking evidence of spot-fixing, this involves manipulating elements of a game (e.g., the number of cards or corners) rather than the match's outcome.

In elite soccer, such misconduct is extremely rare due to exorbitant salaries that eliminate financial motivation. Consequently, if Paqueta is found guilty, he could face a lifetime ban from the sport.

Hopefully, the investigation will conclude soon, leading to either Paqueta joining Manchester City or West Ham recovering from the frustration of potentially missing out on a significant transfer deal.
