Goodbyes to celebrities and the continent of Europe. - Werder's Tearful Day
Werder Bremen sends Bochum to relegation with a well-deserved 4-1 victory, narrowly missing out on the eighth spot and the opportunity to compete in Europe. Heidenheim ultimately snags that spot. Both teams have 42 points, but Heidenheim has a better goal difference (-5) compared to Werder's (-6). It's a heartbreaking loss, as Werder was close to their goal, only needing two more goals from a myriad of missed opportunities.
A thrilling end to an exciting season filled with powerful emotions.
Head of soccer, Clemens Fritz (43), couldn't hold back his emotions at the Sky microphone as tears streamed down his face. Mitchell Weiser (30) also cried, heartbroken by the departure of veteran Christian Groß (joining Leverkusen as a scout) and the missed chance to compete in the Conference League.
Weiser, Werder's wingman, shared, "It's hard to see my good friend crying. I shed a few tears myself, not just for Groß, but also because of that goal that eluded me."
The poignant emotions started even before the game. A fan march, attended by 5,500 supporters, uplifted the atmosphere at Weser Stadium. The 2004 double heroes, including coach Schaaf, Ailton, and Micoud, received a warm reception. Amidst the farewells, other long-time members like Jiri Pavlenka (32) and Nick Woltemade (22) were also honored.
Coach Ole Werner (36) expressed gratitude for the electrifying atmosphere, "The fans were incredible today. It was an emotional start and they kept us going till the end."
The players, alhough disappointed at missing out on the European chance, were mostly resilient, led by captain Marco Friedl. Friedl acknowledged their amazing second half performance, "We're incredibly proud of the 25 points we managed in the second half. We'll enjoy this day with our departing teammates and work hard next season."
