What must occur - Werder's pathway to securing a spot in European competitions
In a commendable show, Bremen displayed an impressive performance in the match against Leipzig, ending in a 1:1 draw. However, the team was only left with one point to show for it. Although none of their opponents secured a win by Saturday, Hoffenheim thrashed Darmstadt 6-0, pushing them to the 7th position.
The only chance for Werder (11th) to make it to the 8th spot is through the Conference League play-offs. This secretly lies in Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen's potential victory over second-division team Lautern in the cup.
Thehome encounter with Bochum (14th) becomes a necessary pre-requisite to help VfL stay in the league. They will require at least a point after their 5-0 drubbing against Leverkusen.
Werder's Europe Dream is Still Alive!
A defeat for Freiburg (currently 8th) courtesy of Union Berlin (16th) in coach Christian Streich's last game is equally crucial.
Furthermore, Werder hopes for a misstep or a better performance by their rivals, Heidenheim (9th) and Augsburg (10th), who are at par on the points tables. While it's largely improbable, miracles do happen. Werder's goalkeeper, Michael Zetterer, shows faith in the small probability of success in this matter: "There's still a slim possibility on the last matchday."
