Legendary figure from Manchester United returns to sideline - Wayne Rooney secures a new coaching position.
Wayne Rooney, aged 38, will be taking charge of football team Plymouth Argyle in England's second division during the upcoming season. He is reportedly returning to management after a short, unsuccessful tenure with Birmingham which resulted in their relegation to League 3.
In the time since leaving Birmingham, Rooney has primarily been working as a TV commentator, making appearances on Sky, TNT Sports and BBC Sport. Recently, it was revealed that he'll be heading to Germany for live commentary on the BBC's coverage of the European Championships.
Plymouth Argyle's current coach, Ian Foster, was dismissed in April following under two months in charge. The team ended the season in a spot just above the relegation zone, placing them in 20th place.
The selection process for Foster's replacement was spearheaded by Argyle's director of football, Neil Dewsnip. Rooney's relationship with Dewsnip goes back to their days together at Everton.
Rooney started his managerial journey at Derby County, initially taking on a player-coach role before transitioning to a permanent position in January 2021. However, his tenure at the helm of Derby County ended in relegation that same year.
Now, Rooney prepares for a comeback on the touchline after another temporary position at D.C. United.
