Veteran defender of St. Pauli. - Wahl unveils: Aiming for Ascent was our objective from the start.
### Fabian Hürzeler: Our Target Was to Promote to the Bundesliga
Fabian Hürzeler, the coach of St. Pauli, had previously mentioned that their primary objective was to reach the Bundesliga. Wahl, the team member, confirmed this, saying, "If Coach Hürzeler has already mentioned that, I can agree with it. You could already see last season, especially in the second half, what the team was capable of."
Wahl further explained the team's state of mind at the beginning of the season, "That gave us a lot of confidence. We had already reached a much higher level than in previous years. We just needed to make a few adjustments and enhance certain aspects. So, our goal was to be promoted to the Bundesliga."
Was there any major meeting to decide this? Wahl clarified, "We had many discussions together. Hinnerk Smolka, who plays a significant role in this, always initiated or moderated these meetings. We understood that we were setting the bar high. It wasn't easy, but we succeeded."
As a local of Hamburg, this promotion means a great deal to Wahl. He came close to the Bundesliga with FC Ingolstadt in the 2016/17 season, playing on the bench a total of seven times, including in the first game at HSV.
Wahl recalled, "It bothered me back then that I didn't get to play a single minute." There was also the agonizing loss with Kiel in the relegation play-off in 2021. "The Bundesliga has always been my ultimate goal. I'm ecstatic right now."
Now, to win the second division championship in Wiesbaden? It's highly significant for Wahl: "Winning the championship title carries more weight than merely getting promoted to the second division. I've never won a title in my career, apart from maybe a national cup. That's why we're undoubtedly driven to win the championship trophy as well."
