European Union - Von der Leyen defends collaborating with the right.

Ursula von der Leyen, the EU Commission President, spoke up to defend her plans of collaborating with right-wing European Parliament forces. During an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio, she maintained, "It's about swaying the essential political units necessary for the majority in the center."

The focus should not be on the parliamentary groups, but the individual members of those groups. According to Von der Leyen, "The benchmark for me is that the MPs we want to partner with, to who we extend an invitation, are pro-European, support Ukraine, and stand firm against Russia, and uphold the rule of law."

In April, Von der Leyen did not dismiss the possibility of teaming up with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) parliamentary group, which encompasses the party of Italian Prime Minister Meloni and the ultraconservative Fratelli d'Italia.

On Thursday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz subtly cautioned the Commission President against potentially obtaining another term in office by teaming up with right-wing extremists following the European elections on June 9. Scholz expressed his disappointment about the "misleading ambiguity" in certain recent political assertions, emphasizing, "A Commission presidency founded on traditional parties is the only viable option. (...) Any other choice would be detrimental to the future of Europe."
