Visitors at an Iowa casino allegedly spat, kicked and threatened first responders
An Iowa woman was arrested Sunday afternoon for allegedly yelling profanities and making threats and spit at a police officer and an emergency medical technician at a local casino. Arrested.
Missy Smith, 31, of East Moline, Iowa, also allegedly kicked a paramedic. The worker did not appear to suffer any serious injuries.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 pm at the Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf. Smith refused to leave her hotel room. She was supposed to check out around 11am.
Authorities wanted to investigate her medical condition, so Bettendorf Fire Department rescuers contacted the casino hotel.
When they tried to check her vital signs, Smith "became angry and yelled obscenities and threats," according to local police. Next, she "began waving her hands and kicking first responders and medical personnel," police added.
Paramedics then placed Smith on a stretcher so an ambulance could take her to a local hospital.
Instead of cooperating, Smith allegedly "kicked the paramedic multiple times and threw her head back, collecting a large amount of saliva and mucus and forcibly spitting the collected saliva into (an officer's) eyeball" .”
Spit mask, restraint
Emergency crews then placed a restraint device called a "wrap" on Smith's legs to prevent her from kicking again. They also put a spit hood on her in the hope that her saliva wouldn't splash on anyone again.
But that didn't stop her.
While in the back of the ambulance, (Smith) continued to spit at the paramedic forcefully, forcing him to spit from the hood," the police report states.
Smith was charged with felonious assault in certain occupations.
Cannabis Charges
Police also found suspected marijuana in Smith's hotel room, which led to charges of possession of a controlled substance.
Local police said the hotel room smelled of burnt marijuana. Officers entered the room and found an unknown amount of marijuana, a grinder and paraphernalia used to smoke marijuana.
After his arrest, Smith was booked into the Scott County Jail in Iowa. Her bond was set at $5,300. She has been detained since the beginning of this week. She is scheduled to appear in Scott County Court on Jan. 11.
It was unclear whether she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. It's unclear which illness requires medical attention.
Police did not say whether Smith had a medical condition that made her saliva a health risk to first responders.
