Virgin to Assume Control of Las Vegas Casino Operations, Mohegan Steps Down
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment have declared today that the Virgin Las Vegas is heading toward a "transition period," leading to Virgin taking over the casino operations at the off-Strip site.
Following the completion of this transition, Mohegan will stop playing a role in the daily management of the casino. No information was provided regarding the duration of the shift or the financial repercussions connected with it.
Virgin Las Vegas President Cliff Atkinson expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Mohegan and added in a press release that they will work together to ensure a smooth handover of casino operations. He stated, "This transition is part of our ongoing goal to provide guests at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas with an uninterrupted resort experience."
The casino at Virgin Las Vegas currently uses Mohegan's Momentum loyalty platform. Upon the conclusion of the transition to Virgin operation, a new rewards program is expected to be implemented, with tier matching to Momentum included.
Troubled Waters for Virgin Las Vegas
Mohegan has overseen the casino at Virgin Las Vegas since the property's opening in September 2019. Over this time, the integrated resort has faced difficulties in attracting a loyal clientele. It's positioned off, yet not far from the Strip, making it a less-than-conventional tourist destination in Las Vegas, while not being seen as a locals casino either.
Moreover, the property exhibited a level of outsourcing that's not typical in the city's casino hotels. The casino has been overseen by Mohegan - the gaming and leisure branch of Connecticut's Mohegan Tribe. The venue's theater is run by AEG Live, while the hotel is part of Hilton's Curio Collection. Also, its sportsbook - is managed by Betfred.
Although some of the property's challenges may be alleviated by operating the casino under Virgin's control, it remains uncertain how much, if any of these issues, can be attributed to Mohegan's involvement.
The statement reads, "With both Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and Mohegan committed to a seamless transition, the transition period is planned to be concluded by the end of this year, with no major disruptions expected for resort guests and staff."
One Fewer Tribal Casinos in Las Vegas
With Mohegan leaving the Virgin Las Vegas, the number of Las Vegas casinos managed by Tribal gaming entities is reduced from three to two. Hard Rock International manages the Mirage on the Strip, while the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians of California is responsible for the off-Strip Palms.
Due to the enormous cash reserves of Tribal operators like Hard Rock, Mohegan, and several from California, it's likely that if more Las Vegas gaming establishments are put up for sale, Sin City's Tribal gaming population could expand.
Also of note, news of Mohegan's pending departure from Las Vegas surfaced less than three months after it was revealed that they would end their management agreement at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ at the end of this year.
