Controversy in the Formula 1 Racing Circuit - Verstappen flips middle finger at fans
Did the champion's behavior come across as fitting?
A Formula 1 competitor was recently caught on camera giving a fan the middle finger at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
A controversy is brewing.
Formula 1 Scandal: Verstappen Shows Fan Middle Finger
A clip captures Verstappen pulling into the pits and raising his middle finger with his right hand.
However, the Dutch driver seemed unperturbed by his actions, as he humorously explained later:
"There was a comical anecdote during qualifying. We entered the pits, the crowd was clapping and one guy made a gesture towards me, so I reciprocated with a middle finger."
Still, the episode between Verstappen and the audience was not over. According to the three-time world champion: "The next time I passed by, he clapped. You learn."
Later, the fans themselves spoke out. The Italians apologized to Verstappen and clarified the meaning of what gesture the driver was referring to. The fans made a 'thumbs down' gesture towards the world champion, which is largely harmless. Why the champion reacted to such an innocuous act with a middle finger probably remains a mystery to him.
Red Bull driver Verstappen secured his fifth win of the campaign on Sunday, edging past McLaren driver Lando Norris by mere fractions of a second. It was a nail-biting finish! In the end, Red Bull needed to hold their breath with McLaren steadily gaining ground and Verstappen almost missing the mark. Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari came third.
Following the race, some Italian fans jeered the champion. But Verstappen showcased a mature response, simply smiling through the boos and celebrating with his team.
The next race is slated for next Sunday in Monaco (3pm, Sky).
