Vegas Visitor Threatens Legal Action for Inferior Dung Ink by Uncertified, Suspected Stoned Technician
A woman from British Columbia, Canada, who goes by the name Melissa, plans to sue a Las Vegas tattoo shop for letting an unlicensed artist work on her while she was a tourist. She shared her experience with KLAS-TV/Las Vegas. In April, she and her son visited Illuminati Tattoo for his 17th birthday, following the studio's highly-rated reviews on Yelp.
Ink Trouble
Melissa's son got a successful tattoo, but her experience was nothing short of a nightmare. She claimed that the artist had issues during her session, sometimes not even using any ink and not cleaning her before applying the tattoo to her thigh. The artist was also reheating the stencil repeatedly, which she found strange.
Furthermore, she said she noticed him "sweating profusely, his eyes were dilated, and he was slurring his words." Concerned, she noticed her son looking confused and saw him filming the incident.
Following the event, Melissa started receiving text messages from the tattoo artist. One read, "I'm sorry it went this far." The other message asked her to call the shop's owner, David LePenske, and informed her that he won't "ruin [him]."
Lack of Consent and Valid License
Later, LePenske agreed to pay for the laser tattoo removal and uncovered a disturbing fact. He declared that the artist involved was his longtime friend and confessed that he had been a drug addict only eight months ago. But he gave him a second chance.
After complaining to the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), they found several violations. Melissa was shocked when she learned the artist didn't have an active body art card and didn't get her to sign a consent form. Both of these are necessary for undergoing a tattoo session.
A document obtained by KLAS states that the artist is no longer with the shop and that there's "a zero-tolerance policy for substance use while on duty." Apart from this, an inspection revealed other violations, such as expired sterilized equipment.
Another matter that came to light is that the business license of Illuminati Tattoo is in default for failing to renew their state business license for 2023 and 2024. By May, it was listed as revoked.
"I just regret the whole ordeal," Melissa said. "You think coming to Vegas, they have the best tattoo artists in the world, and it's supposed to be one of the best places to get a tattoo," she told KLAS.
