Vegas Restaurant Roundup: Sin City’s Lonely James Beard Finalist
Only one of Las Vegas’ four semifinalist nominees is a finalist for this year’s James Beard Foundation Award, considered the Oscars of restaurants.
It was announced Wednesday that Steve Kestler of Aroma Latin American Cocina in Henderson will compete for Best Chef in the Southwest category. The Southwest includes Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.
The chef-owner opened Aroma in October 2021 also to celebrate the home-cooked cuisine of his native Guatemala. Last year, the eight-table shop was named the best taco shop in America by Yelp.
Oscar Amador of Anima by EDO did not make it to the final round in the Outstanding Chef category.Kimmie and Josh Mcintosh of MILKFISH Bakeshop also did not win the Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker award. Neither DJ Flores of Milpa n nor Brian Howard of Sparrow + Wolf will compete with Kestler for the title of "Best Chef in the Southwest."
Last year, two Las Vegas chefs and a bar were Beard finalists. This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony in Chicago on June 10.
