Vegas Raiders Dismiss Head Coach Josh McDaniels Amid Season Difficulties
On Tuesday night, the Las Vegas Raiders made some big decisions. They let go of head coach Josh McDaniels, general manager Dave Ziegler, and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi. The Raiders have a 3-5 record and are currently in last place in the AFC West. They lost two games in a row, including a 30-12 game against the Chicago Bears in Week 7. Their most recent defeat happened on Monday Night Football, in a 26-14 battle against the Detroit Lions.
Owner Mark Davis announced these changes, stating, "After much thought about what the Raiders need to move forward, I have decided to part ways with Josh and Dave." He thanked both men for their hard work and wished them well.
Antonio Pierce, previously the linebackers coach, will step in as the interim head coach. Champ Kelly, who served as assistant GM under Ziegler, will take over as general manager for the remainder of the season.
This marks the twelfth time since 2002 that the Raiders have switched head coaches while still searching for a playoff win. It's also the fourth time since 2008 they've replaced their head coach during the season.
McDaniels had a six-year contract with the Raiders. He was fired after just 25 games and holds a 9-16 record since joining the team in 2022. The Raiders had a disappointing start to the season, losing 6-11 after inheriting a 10-7 team that qualified for the playoffs. To fix that, they signed Jimmy Garoppolo during the off-season.
McDaniels had a tough time finding success with the Raiders. He's now out of two head coaching jobs, having been let go after his second season at the Denver Broncos where he had a 11-17 record.
Davis is looking for a new coach and general manager this off-season. Brian Flores, Jim Harbaugh, Dan Quinn, and Raheem Morris are some potential candidates.
Despite his poor record, McDaniels was a highly successful coach in New England under Bill Belichick. He helped the Patriots win six Super Bowls and was supposed to bring those offensive tactics to the NFL. However, he struggled to create a competitive team against the high-scoring defenses in his divisional rivals.
The Raiders have won three games this season, but all victories were close games decided by a total of nine points. They've never won a game by more than four points. They averaged 14.2 points per game in their losses and ranked as the third-worst scoring team in the NFL with just 15.8 points. Their offense produced only 268.3 yards per game, the second-lowest in the NFL.
The Raiders also have the worst rushing team in the league, averaging a meager 70 yards per game.
The Raiders have an uphill battle to make the playoffs. Their projected win total was just 6.5, making them -3000 odds to miss the playoffs. They're priced at +1200 to make it.
The Raiders are set to play two more games at home in Las Vegas. They'll face the New York Giants in Week 9 and meet the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football in Week 10. While the Raiders are slight favorites against the Giants, quarterback Daniel Jones missed three games with a neck injury but is expected to return versus the Raiders.
The Raiders have a 3-5 record against the betting spread this season. The Giants stand at 2-5-1 ATS.
