Vegas Myths Debunked: Unveiling the Truth behind Elvis's Residence

The house located at 2520 Castlesands Way is not currently available for purchase. However, its Redfin listing showcases the legendary rock and roll history that local Las Vegas kids have cherished about the residence for years.

"The Elvis House was originally constructed by the International Hotel as a private and exclusive hideaway for various performers delivering shows in Las Vegas, such as Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, and Marilyn Monroe, and an array of other well-known, notorious, and mysterious personalities," the description reads.

Yet, it's undeniably not the actual Elvis house. The King never stepped foot in this property. Not once. He had no history of ever visiting here, even at a glance, as confirmed by Jerry Schilling, a dedicated member of Presley's "Memphis Mafia" entourage, whom I had the privilege of speaking with about this over a decade ago.

This modern-day home, built in 1954, covers 3,300 square feet and exudes a mid-century design. It contains features like slate tiles, glass block windows, lava-rock walls, a spiral staircase, and a waterfall bathtub.

In 1962, the property was acquired by a company associated with casino developer Kirk Kerkorian, who launched the International Hotel in 1969, with Elvis as its second headliner (following Barbra Streisand). Kerkorian made an offer to his headliners, including Elvis, to choose between the house or the hotel's penthouse when they headlined.

Let's Not Play Elvis in This House

After Kerkorian invited Elvis to tour the 5,000-square-foot abode in the 30-floor Imperial Suite, his decision was made, according to Schilling. (For a detailed account of all the real properties connected to Elvis' Las Vegas years, take a look at "The Buildings Elvis Presley Left in Las Vegas.")

As for Redfin's claim that both Dino and Marilyn stayed in the "Elvis" house, it could be valid but also questionable. Neither of them ever performed at the International, thus they had ample opportunities to stay elsewhere when they were in town.

In 1974, musician Joe Macchiaverna allegedly purchased the house for $50K at a foreclosure auction. In the late 1980s, he divided the land surrounding the home, thus sparking the community currently surrounding it.

The third owner, Michael Michaels, reportedly impersonated Elvis — professionally or as a hobby, it's unclear — which is as close as the house ever got to having "The King" reside in it.

Furthermore, there are tales of Middle Eastern renters transforming the house into a brothel. These stories are more believable, but they hardly constitute a desirable aspect of the home.

Money Haven

Interestingly enough, when it comes to real estate transactions, myths often generate higher commissions than facts. Thus, if you examine the Redfin descriptions meticulously, you'll realize that it does not explicitly claim that Elvis ever lived there. Instead, it appears to suggest it through a series of statements.

The house was sold for $825K on March 31, 2022. Let's hope that the selling price was based on its appeal rather than its alleged history.
